- Read the recommended walkway widths: 36 in for the main path people use most (front door to kitchen, hallway to bedroom), 30 in for secondary paths between furniture pieces.

Tips for better results
36 inches isn't negotiable for main paths
It's the minimum for two people to pass without turning sideways, and it matters even more if the path leads to a door you use daily.
Corners eat more space than they look like they do
Add a few extra inches of clearance anywhere a walkway turns a corner — furniture edges make tight turns feel tighter than the raw measurement suggests.
Doors and drawers need swing room, not just floor space
A dresser against a wall still needs 24–30 in in front of it so drawers can fully open — factor that into your usable-area estimate.
